Safer Temple City

Temple City, California

The three hours with the most crashes start when school lets out.

From January 2015 to June 2026, 201 injury crashes happened on weekdays between 3 and 6 PM, more than in any other three hours of the week. I mapped every crash so families and older neighbors can see where to take extra care.

3 to 6 PM is 9% of the week's hours and 19% of all crashes. The busiest other three hours, noon to 3 PM, had 142.

For parents

If your kid walks or bikes home from school

  1. Open the map on After schoolIt shows only crashes on weekdays from 3 to 6 PM, with schools marked in green.
  2. Find the school and the way homeZoom in on the streets your kid actually walks or rides.
  3. Look for the large circlesIn the after-school view, a circle's size shows how many after-school crashes happened at that intersection.
  4. Walk it together oncePoint out the busy crossings and agree on where to cross.
  • 3 PMis the worst hour of the weekday for kids 17 and under hurt in crashes.
  • 50of the 189 kids hurt in Temple City crashes with a recorded time were hurt on a weekday between 3 and 6 PM.
  • 20of the 57 kids hit while walking or biking, with a recorded time, were hit in those same three hours.

Fewer crashes doesn't make a street safe. Busy streets have more crashes partly because more people use them, so treat the map as a guide to where to take extra care.

For older adults and caregivers

Older adults hit while walking or biking were more often killed or seriously hurt

The after-school rush isn't the pattern for people 65 and older: only 4 of the 36 with a recorded time were hit while walking or biking on a weekday from 3 to 6 PM. When they were hit, the injuries were more often severe. The numbers are small, so read them as a warning sign rather than a precise rate.

  • 9 of 38people 65+ hit while walking or biking were killed or seriously hurt (24%). For all ages it was 16%, and for kids 12%. 2 of them died.
  • 19of the 36 with a recorded time were hit between 7 AM and 3 PM.
  • 11were hit after dark.
  • 222people 65+ were hurt in crashes of all kinds, including 5 who were killed.

Who I am

Why I made this

My name is Dante Fernandez and I have lived in Temple City my whole life, I study computer science at Cal State LA, and also work for the city's Parks and Recreation department. This is a personal project I have been working on during my own time, not a city project.

I made this for families walking home from school, and for older neighbors and the people who look after them. If you know where crashes keep happening, you can plan around them, and you can ask the city to fix them. Next, I plan to share the analysis with the city to support its street-safety work.

Every injury crash in California goes into a police report and a statewide database. The records are public, but most people will never open the research tool they sit in. I pulled every Temple City record from January 2015 to June 2026, matched each crash to the nearest intersection, and checked my counts against the ones UC Berkeley publishes.

Used the map to plan a walk home, or have a thought about it? Leave a short note. I read every one before it goes up, so yours may take a few days to appear.

Thanks. Your note was sent and will show up here after I read it.

Please don't include anyone's full name or address, or details of a specific crash. Your note is shown with the name you give, or as Anonymous.

What's saved: your note, name, role and language, plus a one-way code made from your internet connection. The code is only used to stop spam and is erased after a day. Notes stay up until they're removed; to have yours taken down, send another note saying which one.

The data

1,057 injury crashes, Jan 2015–Jun 2026

Source: UC Berkeley SafeTREC's Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS), built from California's statewide police crash reports. It covers crashes where someone was hurt or killed. 2026 runs through June.

Totals count every person in the victim records. 17 of them are on crash reports with no time or place recorded, so figures about time of day count only people whose crash time is known.

To protect the people involved, the map shows only the month, year and hour of each crash, with no report numbers.

  • 14people killed
  • 77people seriously injured
  • 23.9%of all crashes were on Las Tunas Dr, home to the three intersections with the most crashes in the city.
